Abstract: | The study examined the effect of school management committees’ functions on pupils ‘academic performance in primary schools in Kiboga district, Uganda. The objectives of the study were; to find out the effects of school management committees’ development plans on pupils academic performance in selected public primary schools in Kiboga district, Uganda, to examine the effects of school management committees’ monitoring activities on the academic performance in selected public primary schools in Kiboga district, Uganda and to assess the effect of school management committees on auditing accounts of public primary schools in Kiboga district, Uganda. The researcher used a cross sectional survey design with both qualitative and quantitative research methods. It was found out that Kiboga district participate in school supervision, SMC prepares staff meeting with different education stakeholders including teachers concerning to students’ academic performance, SMC coordinates parents, teachers and students meeting to discuss the academic performance of the students and SMC contributes to further management training for teachers or other members. It was also found out that SMCs in Kiboga district do not check through teachers’ schemes of work and lesson plans, influence parents/citizens to make decision concerning to school academic performances, influence parents/citizens to contribute in teaching and learning resources like books, building and SMCs do not ensure that pupils engage in debating clubs and other extra-curricular activities. In Kiboga district, it is evident that SMCs participate in monitoring capitation grants in school, SMC ensures that teachers receive allowance from school, SMC ensures security and safety of school property and also that SMC practices transparency in their schools. It was recommended that SMC should ensure that they participate in school supervision, supervise schools, prepares staff meeting with different education stakeholders including teachers, coordinate with parents, teachers and students meeting to discuss the academic performance of the students and contributes to further management training for teachers or other members in order to achieve best academic results, SMCs in schools should constantly check through teachers’ schemes of work and lesson plans, SMCs should monitor capitation grants, teachers/staff allowance and also ensures safety and security of school property. |
